It happened around 9:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19 in Bellport.

A 2000 Nissan Maxima merged onto westbound Sunrise Highway (Route 27) from the onramp at Horseblock Road and collided with a westbound 2017 Ford F-150, Suffolk County Police said.

The collision caused the Nissan to spin around and come to a stop facing eastbound in the westbound lanes, and forcing the Ford to strike the guardrail before coming to a stop several hundred feet away.

A 17-year-old girl from Bay Shore was driving a 2020 Toyota Tundra westbound, when she stopped the vehicle on the grass on the south side of the roadway to offer assistance and call 911 to report the crash, said police.

The driver of the Nissan was apparently standing outside of the vehicle, when a westbound 2012 Kia Optima collided with the Nissan, causing the Nissan to crash into the Toyota, said police.

The driver of the Nissan, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Ford, a 41-year-old Coram man, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the Kia, a 75-year-old Patchogue man, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries.

The 17-year-old driver of the Tundra and another passenger were not injured.

The three vehicles involved in the second crash were impounded for safety checks.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
